Are You Up To A Challenge?

Over on the righthand side of the blog is a link titled "Challenges", which takes you to a brief potted history of some of the "organised" schemes I've signed up over the years in an effort to get myself out on my bike a little bit more than maybe I normally would without some kind of "incentive" (if that's the right term).

I don't know about you, but I don't actually respond very well to the concept of a "challenge". I mean, I like to have goals, but as soon as I sign up to what someone else has defined as a "challenge", I swear my sub-conscious is quickly at work to invent ways not to do it!  (I like how G.E. of EndlessVeloLove explored the whole idea of goals and resolutions in a January 2017 post -- my own experience feels very different from hers because she and I define the words "resolution" and "goals" in almost opposite ways -- but oddly enough, the end result is often the same!)

A classic example for me is the #30daysofbiking challenge that runs the full month of April. When I'm not riding my bike much, then, as much as I like the idea of "pledging" to cycle, even just a short distance, every single day, no way is that going to happen. And if I'm cycling quite a lot, then to be honest, I want a day off now and then! (And the various chronic physical difficulties I deal with often have my sports massage therapist and personal trainer reminding me that recovery is essential, that muscles can only grow stronger if they're given a chance to rest.)

Day Ride in France

The long awaited Day Ride in France!  It was in fact an exceedingly long day: one of the cats woke us at 2am following which we did not get back to sleep. The alarm went off at 04.15 and we did not get home until 00.15 the next morning!

Adam and I took the train to St Pancras where we transferred onto the High Speed service to Dover. We spotted Sonia while walking through the station and found Jurek already settled on the train. Arthur and Tony joined us at Ebbsfleet. The weather from home was damp and foggy and it didn't look much better in Dover.

#30daysofbiking 2015, Exhibit B

My cycling this week ranged from commuting to errands to Touring In Foreign Lands, utilising four different bikes!

Monday, 6th April 2015

On Monday (which was a Bank Holiday), I accompanied Adam to our local Recycling Centre to get rid of a cargo bike + trailer load of mostly electrical goods.

#30daysofbiking 2015, Exhibit A

I tried the #30daysofbiking challenge two years ago but didn't get very far. Last year, I dismissed the idea out of hand because, to be honest, by the time we reach April, spring itself is incentive enough to ride.

I have not "signed the pledge" this year either so, on an official level, I am not doing it. But unofficially, looking at how my schedule is shaping up over the next couple of months, there is in fact a very good chance I will be on a bicycle of some description for at least a few minutes' duration nearly if not every day. And I've got this new toy to play with. So I may as well record a few rides as we go.

30 Days of Biking: Day 15

12 miles on the Cross Check. Oops, no photos. Spring/summer gear on from head to toe today - wouldn't have imagined it a week ago.

30 Days of Biking: Day 13

Finally! Normal shoes, normal gloves and my favourite three-season softshell.  Winter, be gone!
(Temp 15C, can you see that?!)

30 Days of Biking: Day 5

Today was the first day back on a bike after my fall last Sunday. My physiotherapist has worked the kink out of my neck and the bruises are starting to fade.  Meanwhile, the date may be 5 April, but it's still winter here. I went out on the Pacer and remembered all over again why it's my favourite bike to ride.

30 Days of Biking: Day 1.

Well, I have fallen at the first hurdle, so to speak. I am so sore from my fall yesterday that it is very doubtful that I will get on a bike at all today.  The fact the temperature is still barely above freezing, with a strong cold northeasterly wind, isn't helping.

I could wheel the Brompton out into the front drive and pose for a photo.....

But that'd be cheating.

30 Days of Biking

I have several reviews in the pipeline, and an article or two about bike fit.

In the meantime, though, 30 Days of Biking is about to kick off on Monday 1st April and I've signed up!

My goals are to (1) ride a bike every day, (2) take a photo while out on my bike, and (3) post that photo here on the blog before that day ends.

The result will be a pictorial calendar for the month... while getting out on my bike every day.

Several local friends are doing it... as are several of the fellow bloggers in the Blog List on the right.
